| Posted: Wednesday March 3, 2004Carroll Talks About Diet and Statistics Tuesday Lecture
Mar. 3, 2004 - The inability to accurately measure people's diets is a key reason studies have been unable to draw a definite connection between fat intake and breast cancer despite evidence suggesting it as a factor, a Texas A&M University professor said Tuesday.
In fact, said Distinguished Professor of Statistics Raymond J. Carroll, of two studies ever to find a statistically significant link, "one found that fat is good for you."
"The women who developed breast cancer tended to have lower fat intakes," Carroll said during his talk as part of the University Distinguished Lecture Series. Carroll, a member of the Texas A&M faculty since 1987, is regarded as one of the world's most prolific and influential statisticians.
Yet, Carroll said international comparisons find that women in countries with lower per-capita dietary fat intake also have lower rates of breast cancer.
In addition to being on the faculty in the Department of Statistics, he holds appointments on the faculties of nutrition and toxicology and is an investigator in a national study involving 250,000 women that he hopes will produce clearer results than earlier studies.
One of the major problems he finds with most dietary studies is their reliance on self-reporting by subjects on what they eat, either through surveys or by keeping diaries. Most people, Carroll said, don't accurately report their diets - either unintentionally or intentionally.
"It's amazing how it (diary-keeping) will change what you eat - or what you report you eat," he said. These "personal biases" among study subjects, end up skewing the results.
"Even though we eat the same food every day, we are going to do things differently. One of us is going to be willing to say we eat ice cream every day, the other isn't," he said. "It doesn't matter what you eat, you're going to report less fat."

| Posted: Thursday February 26, 2004The 2004 Emanuel and Carol Parzen Prize for Statistical Innovation will be proudly awarded to JEROME H. FRIEDMAN, Professor of Statistics at Stanford University, by the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University. The prize ceremony is on Monday, March 1, 2004 at 4:00 pm, in the Chemistry Building, Room 100.
Professor Friedman will present a popular lecture entitled "Gradient Directed Regularization for Linear Regression and Classification." He will describe his exciting research on linear modeling using novel strategies.
The Parzen Prize is awarded to Jerome H. Friedman for his significant innovations in statistical theory that have transformed practice by the creation of influential software, that have significantly influenced modern computational statistics, and that has provided seminal leadership and statistical foundations to research in Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, Machine Learning and Statistical Learning, and Nonparametric Statistical Methods.
Jerome Friedman is an influential educator, author, journal editor, practitioner, and collaborator in research with many scientists. He has had many outstanding Ph.D. students. He serves the national statistical community with distinction and dedication. Jerome Friedman received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1967, and has been a Professor of Statistics at Stanford since 1982.
Emanuel Parzen is Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Texas A&M University. In 1994 he was awarded the Samuel S. Wilks Memorial Medal of the American Statistical Association “for outstanding research in Time Series Analysis, especially for his innovative introduction of reproducing kernel spaces, spectral analysis and spectrum smoothing; for pioneering contributions in quantile and density quantile functions and estimation; for unusually successful and influential textbooks in Probability and Stochastic Processes; for excellent and enthusiastic teaching and dissemination of statistical knowledge; and for a commitment to service on Society Councils, Government Advisory Committees, and Editorial Boards.

| Posted: Wednesday October 1, 2003 Dr. Ersen Arseven is the 2003 recipient of the H.O. Hartley Award given by the Texas A&M Department of Statistics. The H.O. Hartley Award is given annually to a former student of the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University for distinguished service to the discipline of statistics.
Dr. Arseven is currently Director of Pre-Clinical Statistics at Schering-Plough Research Institute in Kenilworth, NJ. He received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M in 1974 under the direction of Professor Anant Kshirsagar. Dr. Arseven then began his career as a statistician with American Cyanamid Corporation. He was instrumental in establishing a statistics group within the company to deal with regulatory approvals of the company's products. His stint with American Cyanamid culminated with being named Group Leader of Non-clinical Statistics in 1982. From 1984-1992, he worked in the statistics group at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals. By 1990, he had risen to Group Director for U.S. Operations in the Scientific Affairs Division and supervised a group of 83 professionals. In 1993, he left Boehringer to found a private consulting company offering statistical services and consulting to the pharmaceutical industry. For ten years, he continued to serve the pharmaceutical industry in this capacity until joining Schering-Plough in February 2003. Dr. Arseven's nominators stressed his continuous commitment to the statistics profession, particularly in the areas of statistical administration and statistical consulting.
The Hartley Award will be presented to Dr. Arseven at the Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco in August 2003.
